FULLERTON, Calif. - The San Diego State volleyball team began play at the Hawthorne Suites Fullerton Invitational Friday afternoon with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-16) win over Ivy League foe Penn at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Gym. The victory ended a three-match drought for SDSU, which improved to 5-6 on the season. Penn, meanwhile, lost for the fourth time in four outings in 2006.
Three Aztecs ended the day in double figures in kills led By Melanie Greene with 15. The senior outside hitter also had nine digs, two blocks, two assists and an ace. In addition, junior middle blocker Lindsey Mahan finished with a career-high 13 kills and hit .524 over the three games.
Setter Leah Lathrop recorded her first double-d0uble of the campaign (and second of her Aztec career) with 42 assists and 10 digs while Audra Dent chipped in with a dozen kills and seven digs. Aime Cordeiro also recorded a match-high 18 digs and three service aces.
San Diego came out strong from the opening serve as it hit .371 during the opening game while holding the Quakers to a .028 hitting percentage. That trend continued over the next two games as well, with the Aztecs finishing the match with a season-high .361 attack percentage while holding Penn to .100, a season low by an opponent.
SDSU led the match in every statistical category including kills (55-30), assists (47-25), digs (54-48) and blocks (6-2).
The Aztecs continue play at the Fullerton tourney on Saturday (Sept. 16) when they take on Lipscomb at 1:00 p.m. (PDT). They will then face the host Cal State Fullerton Titans later that evening at 7:30 p.m. (PDT)
