ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State women's golf team kicked off its 2006-07 season Monday with the first two rounds of the 28th Annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the par-73, 6,069-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The Aztecs are currently tied for tied for 14th place with Oregon through 36 holes with a score of 27-over 611. Second-ranked Arizona State, one of eight in the 17-school field to appear in the Golfweek preseason top 30, leads the event by eight strokes with a day one total of 9-under 575.
Sophomore Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) is the Aztecs' top individual, tying for 18th place out of 93 golfers with a career-best 36-hole score of 2-over 148. She shot even par in the first round with four birdies and 10 pars, sitting at 11th place in the standings, before carding a 2-over 75 during the afternoon. Kamimura was 1-under par in her second round with four holes left, but bogeyed three out of the four to end up at 2-over.
The team's lone senior, Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), had a solid all-around day, going 3-over in each of her two rounds for a 6-over 152, tying for 43rd place. Sophomore Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) is three strokes behind Oliver with a 155, which is good for 65th place. Redshirt sophomore Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.), who carded a 10-over 156 in her first action since the spring of 2005, and sophomore Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), who recorded a 16-over 162, round out the Aztec contingent.
South Carolina's Jenna Pearson is the current individual leader at 7-under 139, but UTEP's Jullianne Kim and Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll are just one stroke off the pace at 6-under 140.
The Aztecs continue play at the Dick McGuire Invitational Tuesday with the third and final round, beginning just after 8 a.m. MT.
