IRVINE, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team fell to UC Riverside, 1-0, at the UC Irvine Puma Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs, who started eight underclassmen for the sixth straight game, dropped to 3-3 with the loss, while the Highlanders improved their overall record to 5-1.
Despite owning a 13-5 shot advantage, including 7-2 in the second half, and 5-3 lead in corner kicks, SDSU was unable to find the back of the net.
Freshmen Cat Walker and Heather Vandevanter each four shots to lead the Aztec offense, while junior goalkeeper Cat Burson made one save in the losing effort.
Sophomores Jen Mello and Mariko Strickland, and freshman Lauren Leslie were each named to the All-Puma Classic Team.
The Highlanders, who advanced to the NCAA tournament last season, got their goal on a 30-yard shot from Loana Holness in the 51st minute. Linda Allen was credited with the assist on the play. Keeper Tawny Poggio was kept busy all afternoon by SDSU and finished the match with seven stops.
