SAN DIEGO - With just five days left until its 2006 season opener, the San Diego State football team began its game-week preparation Saturday with a two and a half hour, late afternoon workout at the Aztecs' on-campus practice facility. SDSU returned to the field following Friday's off day, only the team's second since reporting to school on Aug. 5.

"We had a good start (today)," Aztec head coach Chuck Long said. "We were a little rusty, because they had some time off, but I'd rather build up through the week up to the game, instead of put it all out there today. It was more about just honing in on UTEP. Our scout teams did a good job showing a picture of what (UTEP) does. We're off and running - it's game week - and I know the guys were ready and excited to get out here."

With fall camp now behind them, the Aztec coaching staff reconfigured the grass practice field, converting it into two 50-yard fields running west to east. The new setup enabled the team to run the same drills simultaneously, including at the end of the day when the scout teams went up against the No. 1 offense and defenses on opposite fields.

San Diego State opens the 2006 season Thursday night in front of a national television audience (CSTV), as the UTEP Miners come to town for a 7:30 p.m. PT kick-off at Qualcomm Stadium.

The story behind the music:
Beginning last spring, Chuck Long started playing music on the field during pre-practice stretching drills. He liked the energy it brought to the beginning of practice and will continue to utilize it during the fall. Coach Long has solicited lists from athletic department personnel, media and throughout the University and plans to select a different playlist every day.
