SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) captured the San Diego City Amateur Golf Championship for the second year in a row on Sunday, completing the tournament with a 1-under 287 at Torrey Pines South Course in La Jolla, Calif. Despite shooting a 5-over 77 during the fourth and final round, the Aztec junior held off a late charge by Jimmy Harris, who finished second with a 290.
Puterbaugh forged a four-stroke lead on Sunday only to see Harris pull even on the 16th hole. While Harris faltered down the stretch, Puterbaugh recorded pars on the 17th and 18th to escape with his second consecutive City Amateur title. Puterbaugh also posted the low round of the tournament, which was played at three courses over two weekends, firing an 8-under 64 at Torrey Pines North on Aug. 13. He also shot an even-par 72 on Saturday during third-round action at Balboa Golf Course.
Two other SDSU golfers also found themselves high atop the leaderboard this weekend. Seniors Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla HS) and John Gray (Vista, Calif./Palomar College) finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 296 along with Patrick Duncan, Jr.
Senior Jason Puterbaugh, Jamie's older brother, also competed in the event, but missed the 54-hole cut by five strokes with a three-round total of 231.
The Aztecs will kick off their 2006-07 campaign next month when they travel to Fukushima, Japan, to compete in the Topy Cup, Sept. 5-7, at Tanagura CC.
