SAN DIEGO - Following its first day off of fall camp, the San Diego State football team returned to action Monday for two practices, one in the late morning and another in the late afternoon, at the on-campus facility. The Aztecs, who completed a successful second scrimmage at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, have four more workouts before beginning their game-week preparation for the opener against UTEP, which is just 10 days away on Aug. 31.

The off day gave the SDSU coaching staff time to evaluate the team's second scrimmage of fall camp, which lasted 67 plays. Aztec head coach Chuck Long praised the play of the team's three returning starters on the defensive line, along with senior Emil Metroka. Long also singled out linebackers Russell Allen, Luke Laolagi, Brett Martin and Jerry Milling and defensive backs Ray Bass, T.J. McKay, Nick Sandford and Aaron Moore. Offensively, Long said that linemen Mike Kravetz and Brandyn Dombrowski, tight ends Matt Kawulok, Waika Spencer and Eric Rouser, wide receivers Brian Spinks and Marcus Montgomery and running backs Atiyyah Henderson and Davon Brown all played well in the scrimmage.

"All four quarterbacks played well and they showed great poise in the scrimmage, which really stuck out to me," Long said about Saturday's workout.

On Monday, the team wore half pads in the morning and full pads in the afternoon, working on receiving routes and run-blocking schemes, as well as punt coverage on special teams. After the afternoon workout, Long announced the team's initial fall two-deep with sophomore walk-on Mike Schmidt at right guard and senior Spinks at one of the receiver spots being two players who could possibly earn their first career starts this season.

The Aztecs will have a single workout on Tuesday, followed by their final two-a-day practice of fall camp on Wednesday. In all, SDSU is holding 29 practices in a span of 26 days leading into the season opener against the Miners.

The story behind the music: Beginning last spring, Chuck Long started playing music on the field during pre-practice stretching drills. He liked the energy it brought to the beginning of practice and will continue to utilize it during the fall. Coach Long has solicited lists from athletic department personnel, media and throughout the University and plans to select a different playlist every day.
