SAN DIEGO - Defense ruled the afternoon as the San Diego State football team went through a 67-play scrimmage as part of Family Day festivities at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Aztec defense, which returns eight starters from last season's squad, limited the offense to 281 yards, one touchdown and one field goal on the afternoon. Head coach Chuck Long showed off the SDSU depth on Saturday, playing four quarterbacks, seven players who were credited with a rush, 10 players who caught a pass and 31 players who recorded a defensive stat.

"The defense came out and played really well, especially early," Long said. "Then the offense caught some fire, and it was just like we thought (the scrimmage) would be today. We still have some things to iron out, but we're in good shape."

Sophomore running back Tyler Campbell scored the games' lone touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Campbell's score capped an 11-play, 61-yard drive.

Junior kicker Garrett Palmer provided the only other score of the afternoon on a 40-yard field goal on the first drive of the second half.

But it was the defensive unit that provided the most impressive numbers this afternoon. The blackshirts accounted for eight tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and two quarterback sacks.

Senior linebacker Trevor Parrington led the way with five tackles, including one tackle for loss. Freshman defensive back Nick Sandford added five stops, including one behind the line of scrimmage, and a pass broken up. Freshman Aaron Moore and freshman Luke Laolagi added four tackles apiece.

Offensively, the numbers were split among the roster. With junior running back Lynell Hamilton sitting out, freshman Atiyyah Henderson led the way with five carries for 38 yards. Freshman Davon Brown added 30 yards on a team-high 10 carries and Campbell carried six times for 18 yards.

Junior quarterback Kevin O'Connell was 4-for-9 for 47 yards. Sophomore Darren Mougey played extensively during the first half and was 10-for-16 for a game-high 95 yards. Freshman Kevin Craft saw action during the second half and was 5-for-8 for 35 yards. Collectively, the quarterbacks threw 42 times on Saturday without an interception.

"Kevin O'Connell's had a great, great camp," Long said. "He had a nice drive today. He's our captain and he'll go in number one, and we're going to practice that way. Darren Mougey and Kevin Craft both played well today and that's what you want - a healthy competition."

Sophomore Marcus Montgomery caught four passes for a team-best 55 yards. Sophomore tight end Justin Shaw and freshman Mekell Wesley had four receptions, apiece.

"We didn't play a lot of our older guys today," Long said. "We kept some guys out purposely because we have seen enough of them and we wanted to play a lot of the younger guys."

Family Day, which marked the second fall scrimmage of the fall, marked the 15th consecutive practice day for the Aztecs. SDSU will take tomorrow off before continuing fall camp on Monday.

"This was the eighth practice for our guys this week," Long said. "It's the most they're going to have at any time during the year, and I thought they fought through it in a big way."

San Diego State opens the season on Thursday, August 31st against UTEP. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PT at Qualcomm Stadium.
