SAN DIEGO - After a hard-fought 70-play scrimmage on Saturday, the San Diego State football team held a low-key two hour workout Sunday afternoon at the on-campus practice facility. The Aztecs went without pads, wearing helmets for their ninth straight day of fall camp.
"I liked a lot of things (about our first scrimmage)," SDSU head coach Chuck Long said. "I liked that our offense struggled early, but kept plugging and made some big plays down the field. I would have liked to have punched those things in the red zone, but on the flip side of that, the defense let up a big play, but managed to stop them when it counted. There are some stats that coaches don't always look at, but the two big ones are scoring offense and scoring defense, which wins a lot of games for you."
SDSU spent its entire late afternoon practice Sunday walking through various formations on both offense and defense, as well as an extensive amount of time running through special teams coverage.
The team will return to its normal practice time slot and routine on Monday with a single afternoon workout, the Aztecs 11th overall of 2006 fall camp. This week's practices precede San Diego State's second scrimmage of fall camp, slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium. The annual Family Day festivities are open to the public.
The Aztecs will hold a total of 29 practices over a span of 26 days leading into the season against the UTEP Miners. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PT at Qualcomm Stadium.
The story behind the music:
Beginning last spring, Chuck Long started playing music on the field during pre-practice stretching drills. He liked the energy it brought to the beginning of practice and will continue to utilize it during the fall. Coach Long has solicited lists from athletic department personnel, media and throughout the University and plans to select a different playlist every day.
