SAN DIEGO - Garrett Palmer (Rialto, Calif.) had three field goals and Darren Mougey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Tyler Campbell (Austin, Texas) each scored touchdowns in the San Diego State football team's first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday at the Aztecs' on-campus practice facility. In front of a packed crowd, SDSU ran through just over 70 offensive plays, not including work on special teams or the "rookie" scrimmage that ended the day.
"It was a typical scrimmage," Aztec head coach Chuck Long said. "There are some things we need to work on, but I thought overall, there was some good hard hitting out there."
Individually, quarterback Kevin O'Connell (Carlsbad, Calif.) completed nine passes for 132 yards, while Atiyyah Henderson (Rockledge, Fla.) led the ground game with 48 yards on 16 carries. Junior wideout Chaz Schilens (Mesa, Ariz.) was one of 11 different receivers to catch a pass, ending the day with three receptions for 49 yards.
Defensively, the secondary led the way with four of the top tacklers, including safety Gerard Armstrong (Hawthorne, Calif.), who tallied a team-high eight stops, and cornerback Aaron Moore (Tampa, Fla.), who recorded seven tackles. The defense had seven tackles for loss, including three sacks, and forced two turnovers.
One of the turnovers came on the offense's first drive of the day, as senior cornerback Donny Baker (Miami, Fla.) picked off an O'Connell pass near midfield. The defense held strong for the next three possessions, limiting the offense to just three plays on each drive.
The offense finally got onto the scoreboard when Palmer drilled his first of three straight field goals from 30 yards out. He later added a 34-yarder and a 47-yarder, which capped a pair of 10-play scoring drives. Palmer had an opportunity for his fourth field goal of the scrimmage from 59 yards, but came up just short.
The lone touchdowns of the day came via the ground as Mougey took one in from nine yards out and Campbell ran up middle for a three-yard score. The offense had two more opportunities on first down from the 20, but went three and out on the first attempt and turned the ball over on downs to round out the team's first scrimmage.
SDSU continues fall camp Sunday afternoon with a single practice on-campus. The workout will be the team's ninth straight day of practice, since beginning preparation for the season-opener on Aug. 5.
The Aztecs will hold their next scrimmage this coming Sat., Aug. 19, when the team travels to Qualcomm Stadium for Family Day, beginning at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public.
