SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior driver Rachel Serna (Coronado HS) has been named an honorable mention All-American by the America Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA). Serna is the 12th Aztec to earn All-America accolades and the fourth to be recognized multiple times. In the 12-year history of the program, SDSU has garnered 19 All-America selections.
Serna, a 2005 third-team All-America selection, started all 34 games and finished with 41 goals, 29 assists and 24 steals. Her goals scored total ranked second on the team, while her assist and steals totals ranked fourth and tied for fifth, respectively. Her 1.21 goals per game average was the 28th-best mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Serna, a four-year letterwinner, ranks among San Diego State's all-time leaders in three categories. She ranks seventh all time in career goals (129) and assists (58) and her 65 goals in 2005 is the eighth-best single-season mark in school history.
In addition to winning consecutive All-America honors, Serna earned honorable mention all-MPSF recognition for the second straight season earlier this year.
The Coronado, Calif., native joins Larisa Baltgalvis (1998-00), Holly Hartzell (2001-04) and Rachel Scott (1997-98) as the only Aztecs to have earned All-America honors on more than one occasion.
San Diego State finished the 2006 campaign with a 22-12 record, their ninth 20-plus victory season, and a No. 7 final national ranking.
