SAN DIEGO - Three San Diego State water polo student-athletes, sophomore Becca Ur, junior Sarah Kilgore and senior Cia Cobb, have been named to the 2006 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Women's All-Academic Team. The awards are broken up into three teams by grade point average (GPA), outstanding (3.71-4.00), superior (3.41-3.70) and excellent (3.20-3.40).
Ur (Lompoc, Calif./Cabrillo HS) received superior team honors with a cumulative GPA of 3.67. It is her second career award and is the first Aztec since Monica DeRosier in 2002-03 to garner superior accolades in consecutive seasons. The 2-meter player scored 22 goals and chipped in with a team-high 49 ejections drawn, 18 steals and five assists while receiving the starting nod in all 34 matches. Ur has 37 goals, 112 ejections drawn, 33 steals and 15 assists in her two years on Montezuma Mesa.
Kilgore (Rossmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) earned a spot on the excellent team with a GPA of 3.24. The honor is the first of her career. In 2006, she enjoyed one of the best seasons in SDSU history as she started all 34 games and made the third-most saves in a single season in school history with 259. Over the course of the year, she guided the Aztecs to their first shutout since 2002 when they blanked Michigan, 13-0, and later combined with Heather Fenske to hold Colorado State scoreless in a 16-0 victory. Kilgore made at least 10 saves on 10 different occasions, at least 13 saves five times and established a career high when she stopped 17 shots at Arizona State. She currently ranks third on SDSU's all-time career saves chart with 536, eight saves shy of Ashley Zabel.
In addition to Kilgore, Cobb (Yorba Linda, Calif./Long Beach CC), a utility player, was placed on the excellent team after achieving a 3.20 grade point average in sociology. This her second such honor of her career and is the first Aztec since Kristin Moore in 2003-04 to repeat as an excellent team recipient. This past season she recorded three goals, 12 assists and nine steals in 24 games. For her career, she amassed 10 goals, 22 assists and 25 steals in 55 contests.
Earlier this month, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honored the trio by naming them to the league's all-academic team.
San Diego State finished the 2006 campaign with a 22-12 record, their ninth 20-plus victory season, and a No. 7 final national ranking.
