SAN DIEGO - The No. 24 San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games to Brigham Young Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (28-11, 13-3 Mountain West Conference) fell to the Cougars (38-19, 13-5 MWC), 4-0, in the first game and 5-3 in the nightcap.

SDSU outhit Brigham Young, 16-10, but left 16 runners on base over the two games.

Freshman Monica Alnes went 4-for-7 over the doubleheader, while Erin Floros was 3-for-7. Classmate Melissa Owens (3-for-5) added three RBI.

In the first game, a 4-0 loss, sophomore pitcher Christina Ross (13-7) tossed five innings of no-hit ball before finally allowing a hit in the top of the sixth inning. She struck out nine batters over 7.0 innings, and gave up just four hits and two earned runs.

Alnes went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Aztec offense and senior Meagan Hartung had a triple.

In the nightcap, the Cougars rallied for three runs in the sixth to hold on for a 5-3 win.

The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the second when Owens singled to right field to score sophomore Taryin Casillas.

Brigham Young answered with solo runs in the third and fourth. A RBI single by Andi Ramirez in the third tied the game at 1-1. The Cougars tacked on another run in the next frame when Jennifer Whiteley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

SDSU took the lead in the fifth when Owens plated Floros and senior Jamie Burton with a single to right field.

However, a three-run homer by Jodi Norton in the sixth gave BYU all the runs it would need.

Owens had three singles and drove in all three runs for the Aztecs, while Floros went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Ross took the loss for SDSU after allowing three runs off four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Senior Celena Velasquez struck out seven over the other 4 2/3 innings. She gave up three walks and two hits.

The Aztecs wrap up their MWC regular season with a doubleheader against Utah, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday. SDSU needs to win both games to win the league outright for the first time since 2003.
