LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State softball team ended its season with a 7-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional at Easton Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Aztecs ended their season with a 34-15 record, their best season in school history. The Bruins (46-7) will host South Florida in the Super Regionals next weekend.
UCLA got the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when a sacrifice fly by Whitney Holum scored Alyssa Eno.
Each team had bases loaded situations with no outs over the next few innings, but both were unable to score a runner.
In the second, SDSU freshman Monica Alnes (infield single), sophomore Taryin Casillas (fielder's choice) and sophomore Chrissie Markham (single to right field) all reached to load the bases. However, sophomore Allison Smith struck out and senior Bree Boyer grounded into a double play the end the threat.
UCLA's Caitlin Benyi (infield single), Emily Zaplatosch (walk), and Jodi Legaspi (error) loaded the bases in the fourth, but Aztec sophomore pitcher Christina Ross grounded Lisa Dodd into a double play and struck out Holum to end the inning.
The Bruins scored six runs in the sixth to break open the 1-0 game, culminating with a grand slam by Ashley Herrera.
Ross (17-10) allowed six runs (five earned) off six hits over five-plus innings to take the loss for SDSU. Senior Celena Velasquez tossed the final two innings and gave up one hit and one run.
Markham had two hits to lead the Aztec offense, while Senior Meagan Hartung singled and reached via a walk. Alnes had SDSU's other hit.
