SAN DIEGO - Three Aztecs players improved their score four strokes from yesterday allowing San Diego State to shoot a 1-over-par 289 in the second round of the NCAA West Regional at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday.
The Aztecs are currently in 17th place, 10 shots behind two teams tied for ninth place. The host school, Arizona leads the 27-team field with a 36-hole total of 24-under-par. The West Regional concludes with 18 holes on Saturday. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on advancing teams will move to the NCAA Championships to be held at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The national championship will be conducted May 31-June 3.
Sophomore David Palm led the way for SDSU on Friday. After struggling to a 2-over-par 74 on Thursday, Palm responded by firing a 2-under-par 70 on Friday. He was even through his first nine holes, but birdied three of his final eight holes to get back to par for the tournament. Senior Andrew Scott bounced back from a 4-over-par score on Thursday to shoot even-par in Friday's second round. Scott survived an early double bogey to card a 72 in the second round. He is 4-over-par for the tournament.
Sophomore Cory Segall survived an agonizing final nine holes to record a 1-over-par 73. He survived a double bogey and two bogeys in the final six holes to end the day with a 36-hole score of 6-over-par. He was able to minimize some of the damage by recording birdies on three of his final eight holes.
Sophomore Aaron Goldberg recorded 13 consecutive pars at one point and settled for a 2-over-par 74. He is 1-under-par for the tournament, following a 3-under-par 69 in yesterday's first round.
Senior Josh Warthen rounded out SDSU's scores with a second round 3-over-par 75. He is 2-over-par through 36 holes.
The Aztecs are making their 11th appearance in the tournament since the field was expanded to include regional tournaments in 1989 and are looking to advance to the national tournament for the 19th time in school history. SDSU has advanced to the national championship three times (1999, 2003 and 2005) since the regional format debuted.
