PROVO, Utah - San Diego State's Kristin Olafsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) placed second in the heptathlon on Thursday during the second day of competition at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Provo, Utah. Olafsdottir equaled her personal-best score of 5,402 points, just 16 points behind the winner Katie Lloyd of Colorado State (5,418 pts.).
"Overall, I thought it was a good competition," said Aztec assistant coach Jennifer Nanista. "We put it all out there the last couple of days. If we get the same effort from the rest of our athletes (at the championships), I think we'll see some good things this weekend."
Olafsdottir competed in three events on Thursday, highlighted by a convincing victory in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.66. She also finished third in the long jump (18-9.25) and fifth in the javelin (110-11). However, Lloyd claimed the title on the strength of first and second-place finishes in long jump and javelin, respectively, to overtake Olafsdottir, who had entered the day clinging to a four-point lead.
Still, the Aztec freshman notched her second NCAA provisional qualifying score of the season and became the fourth SDSU athlete to earn all-MWC honors in the heptathlon, joining Janine Polischuk (2004, 2005), Leslie Miller (2002, 2003) and Aja Frary (2000). Olafsdottir's finish also provided the scarlet and black with eight team points.
Meanwhile, junior Kristin Karhio finished the day in ninth place with 4,670 points. The Pacific Grove, Calif., native recorded lifetime bests in the long jump (17-6.25) and 800 (2:26.35). She also set personal records in the 100 hurdles (15.26), shot put (34-3) and 200 (26.81) on Wednesday. SDSU's other entrant, freshman Corri Campbell-Fell, was pulled from the 800 meters and did not finish the competition.
The 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships resume on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. MDT with the women's hammer throw.
