PROVO, Utah - San Diego State's Kristin Olafsdottir stands in first place in the heptathlon after the first day of competition on Wednesday at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Provo, Utah. The Aztec freshman tallied 3,190 points, holding a slight lead over Colorado State's Katie Lloyd (3,186 pts.) and Sandy Fortner of New Mexico (3,143 pts.). With her score, Olafsdottir is 22 points ahead of her first-day total from the Mt. SAC Heptathlon on April 12 in which she would set a lifetime best with 5,402 points.

Olafsdottir began the meet on a high note, capturing first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.11 seconds. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native then cleared 5-4.5 in the high jump, added a personal-best throw of 36-0.75 in the shot put and ran a 25.41 in the 200 meters.

Olafsdottir was joined in the event by junior Kristin Karhio and freshman Corri Campbell-Fell, who placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Karhio finished with 2,841 points, setting personal bests in the 100 hurdles (15.26), shot put (34-3) and 200 meters (26.81). She also turned in a 5-3.25 effort in the high jump. Campbell-Fell, meanwhile, completed the afternoon with 2,213 points.

The heptathlon concludes on Thursday, starting at 12:30 p.m. MDT with the final three events, the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. The remainder of the MWC Championships is slated to get underway on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. MDT at Clarence F. Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University.
