TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 22 ranked San Diego Aztecs ended the first day of play at the ASU Thunderbird Classic in a tie for first with No. 7 ranked, inner-conference rival UNLV on the par-72, 7,037 yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Should the Aztecs win this event, it will mark the first time since the 2001-02 campaign that the Aztecs have won three back-to-back tournaments in a single season.
After the first round, senior Josh Warthen led all Aztec golfers with a second place finish and a 5-under, 67 score. Warthen carded a 73 (+1) on the second round, to finish the day in 15th. But the sophomore class would not be outshined at this tournament, as Aaron Goldberg and David Palm rallied forward to end the day in a tie for second and fifth respectively.
Senior Andrew Scott finished in a tie for 20th with a 3-under, 141 and sophomore Cory Segall rounded out the rest of the Aztec golfers with a 30th place finish with a first and second round score of 143 (-1).
Action continues tomorrow with the final round starting at 7 a.m.
