No. 24 Aztec Softball Splits With UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 24 San Diego State softball team saw its school-record tying 13-game win streak come to an end with a 7-1 loss to UNLV in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs (28-9, 13-1 Mountain West Conference) won the first game by a 3-0 score.

Sophomore Tamani Wells went 4-for-6 and scored three runs over the two games to pace the SDSU offense, while freshman Monica Alnes was 3-for-5 with four RBI.

In the first game, Alnes, who was named MWC Player of the Week on Tuesday, singled twice and drove in all three Aztec runs in the 3-0 victory.

SDSU got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning. With senior Meagan Hartung and Wells on base after back-to-back singles, Alnes laced a single to left field to plate both runners. The Aztecs scored again in the sixth when Alnes singled home Wells.

For the game, Wells went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, and Hartung singled and scored a run.

Sophomore Christina Ross (13-5) scattered 10 hits over 7.0 innings to earn the win for the Aztecs. She struck out three and induced 13 groundouts for her fourth shutout of the season.

UNLV won the nightcap, 7-1. SDSU scored its lone run on a sacrifice fly by Alnes in the sixth.

Senior pitcher Celena Velasquez (9-4) allowed four runs on three hits over 3 1/3 innings to take the loss. Alnes (1 inning, one unearned run) and freshman Melissa Owens (1 2/3 innings, two earned runs) also pitched for SDSU.
