SUNRIVER, Ore. - The No. 21 San Diego State men's golf team held on to their position from yesterday to finish the Mountain West Conference championships in second place, on the par-72, 7,630-yard Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore. This is the third time in the past six years that the Aztecs have finished this event in second place. SDSU finished the MWC tourney with a 294-280-296--870 (+6) final score, putting the team five strokes above tournament champion, New Mexico.
SDSU has placed second in its conference tournaments six times since 1979 (1980, 1981, 1984, 2001, 2003 and 2006). The Aztecs have never won a conference tournament during both the WAC and MWC eras.
Senior Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev.), in his career-best, conference-tournament finish, ended in a two-way tie for second with an even-par 216. During the back nine, Scott was leading all scorers with an even par score and in first place. But after bogeying on the 13th and 14th holes, as well as on the final hole, it pushed him down into a tie for second.
Junior John Gray (Vista, Calif.), who experienced a rough first and second round, came back to lead all Aztec golfers with a 1-under 71. Gray would finish in 37th with a 234 (+18) final score. Sophomore Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) and senior Josh Warthen (Pismo Beach, Calif.) tied for 14th, after firing a 77 and 74 respectively.
Although sophomore David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden) bogeyed six times - three on the front nine, as well as on the back nine - and ending the third round with a 78, he still was able to place in the top-20, owning the 19th spot on the leaderboard.
