SUNRIVER, Ore. - After a dismal first round of play, the No. 21 San Diego State men's golf team climbed out of fifth place and into second on the second day of the Mountain West Conference championships on the par-72, 7,630-yard Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore. SDSU carded an 8-under 280 team score - the lowest team score in the tournament thus far - to put them within seven strokes of tournament leader, New Mexico.
Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev.) led the Aztecs again with a second-round score of 142 (-2). He held onto his position from yesterday, remaining in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard.
After shooting a 2-under 70 during the second round of play, sophomore Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) moved up from 15th and into a six-way tie for sixth with fellow teammate David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden). Palm, who was one stroke behind Goldberg yesterday, came back today to fire a 69 (-3) and end the day with a 143 (-1).
For the Aztecs, senior Josh Warthen (Pismo Beach, Calif.) made the biggest jump of the day, climbing up 15 positions from 32nd, to finish in a six-way tie for 17th. Along with Palm, Warthen also fired off a second-round score of 69, to push his overall score down to a 146 (+2). Rounding out the starting five was junior John Gray (Vista, Calif.) who shot, who ended the day with a 163 (+19) and in 43rd place.
The Aztecs will conclude the MWC championships tomorrow with the third, and final, round. The tournament will tee off at 8 a.m., while the Aztecs will tee off at 10:10 a.m.
