IRVINE, Calif. - Ninth-seeded San Diego State fell to No. 1 and top-seeded Southern California in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship, 11-4, Friday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Center. The loss drops the Aztecs to 21-11 on the season, while USC improves to 25-0.
SDSU matched the Women of Troy goal-for-goal in the first quarter as each scored on three different occasions. The Aztecs scored first to take the early lead and kept the pressure on USC as they scored three times in the game's initial four minutes of action. After a Southern California goal at 2-meters, SDSU went into the second period tied at three thanks to goals by Savanah Kelley, Elana Cervantes and Rachel Serna.
The Women of Troy created a two-goal lead as they scored twice to open the second quarter. Stacy Werner, however, kept the Aztecs close when her shot bounced off the post and past USC goalkeeper Whitney Morgan bringing SDSU to within one. That would be the last time the Aztecs would score as Southern California went on to tally six unanswered goals the rest of the way to advance to the tournament semifinals.
San Diego State goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore stopped eight shots on the day, while her counterpart Morgan stopped four.
The Aztecs move into the consolation bracket and will face California, Saturday, April 29, at 11 a.m. PDT.
