SUNRIVER, Ore. - The No. 21 San Diego State men's golf team ended the first day of the Mountain Conference Championships in fifth place at the par-72, 7,568-yard Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore. The Aztecs ended round one carding a 294 (+6), 10 strokes behind leaders No. 9 BYU, No. 34 New Mexico and No. 37 TCU, who are tied for first with a score of 284 (-4). No. 8 UNLV currently holds a two-stroke lead over the Aztecs in fourth place.
Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev.) ended the first round in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard. Scott fired a 2-under 70 to lead SDSU. The senior is tied with three other golfers and is one stroke behind the leader, Clay Ogden of BYU. Ogden's score of 69 (-3) was good enough to stand alone in first place.
Another Aztec golfer who ended Thursday's opening round in the top 20 was sophomore Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.). Goldberg is in a four-way tie for 15th overall, carding a score of 73 (+1). One stroke behind Goldberg is fellow teammate sophomore David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden). Palm currently sits in a three-way tie for 19th place with a score of 2-over 74.
Rounding out the starting five for the Aztecs are senior Josh Warthen (Pismo Beach, Calif.) and junior John Gray (Vista, Calif.). Warthen shot a 5-over 77 to end the first round tied for 32nd. Gray carded a 9-over 81 to finish in a tie for 39th.
The Aztecs continue the MWC Championships Friday with the second round, teeing off at 11:40 a.m.
