ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State softball team scored a school-record 21 runs in the second game of a doubleheader to complete a two-game sweep over New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs (27-8. 12-0 MWC) won the first game, 8-6, before routing the Lobos (21-25, 2-12 MWC), 21-5, in the nightcap.

In its record-breaking game, SDSU scored eight runs in the first inning and plated another 10 runs in the fourth en route to the 21-5 victory. The 21 runs eclipsed its record set earlier this season in 20-2, five-inning win over Rider on Feb. 17.

Freshman Monica Alnes went 4-for-4, hit for the cycle (home run, triple, double, single), and had career highs of five RBI and four runs to lead the Aztec offense. Sophomore Taryin Casillas was 3-for-5 with a home run and a career-high five RBI, while freshman Erin Floros (3-for-4) added three hits and three RBI. Freshman Melissa Owens was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior Bree Boyer (1-for-2) hit her first home run of the season and drove in three runs.

Alnes (2-0) earned the win on the mound for SDSU after striking out two and giving up two hits over the final 2 1/3 innings. Velasquez pitched the first 2 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits and five runs.

In the first game, Alnes doubled home junior Amanda Beasley in the seventh inning with the go ahead run and the Aztecs added another when Boyer drew a bases loaded walk to give SDSU an 8-6 victory.

The Aztecs jumped out to a 6-0 lead, highlighted by a fourth inning grand slam by sophomore Megan McDonald. Boyer (second inning) and Floros (fourth inning) each had RBI singles for SDSU's other runs.

Floros went 3-for-4 and Alnes was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. McDonald (1-for-4, four RBI), Boyer (1-for-3, two RBI) and sophomore Tamani Wells (1-for-3, two runs) also had big games at the plate for the Aztecs.

Velasquez (10-3) struck out five batters over the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win for SDSU. She allowed two hits without giving up a walk. Junior Christina Ross pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits. She struck out six and walked two.

The Aztecs will look to continue their best conference start in school history when they travel to UNLV for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Saturday.
