SAN DIEGO - Utah pounded out 24 hit including five doubles, a triple and three home runs as it took game two of its series with San Diego State by a score of 20-7 Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory improved the Utes to 18-14 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference while SDSU dropped to 12-27 (5-4 MWC).
In a contest that started 30 minutes late due to rain, the Aztecs grabbed a quick lead with a run in their first at bat as Brock Ungricht singled home Quintin Berry, who had led off the game with a single.
That lead was short-lived however, as the visitors struck for two in the second and three in the third off starter Mike Koons to take a 5-1 lead. The big blow in the third was a three-run homer by third baseman Erich Kemp.
With two out in the top of the third, the game was halted for a second time due to rain. After a one-hour and 25 minute stoppage, SDSU scored its second run in the bottom of the third when Ungricht singled home Paul Smyth, who had doubled ahead of him.
From that point on it was all Utah, as it scored 15 runs over the next three innings off three Aztec relievers, including nine in the fourth to give the Utes a 14-2 advantage. A two-run double by right fielder Joe Mozeleski was followed later in the frame by a grand slam off the bat of first baseman Jay Brossman.
Utah's other homer came in the next inning, a two-run shot by Corey Shimada that ended a run of four straight h-ts that included a single, double, triple and four-bagger.
Trailing 20-2, San Diego State got a pair of runs in the sixth on Quintin Berry's two-run homer and added two more in the seventh on RBIs by Brian Kinsman and Joey Huskins. SDSU got its final run in the bottom of the ninth on Chris Anderson's RBI single. It was Anderson's fourth hit of the game as he enjoyed his best offensive night of his two-year Aztec career.
Ute starter Eric King, who pitched well until being removed after the long weather delay, was credited with the win to improve to 3-4. Aztec starter Mike Koons, who gave up Utah's first five runs over 2.2 innings of work, took the loss to fall to 3-6.
In addition to Chris Anderson, SDSU's other top offensive stars included Brock Ungricht (3-for-3, two RBI), Quintin Berry (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 steals) and Paul Smyth (2-for-3, two doubles, two runs scored).
San Diego State and Utah conclude their three-game series on Saturday, April 15, at noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
