LA JOLLA, Calif. - After a successful first day of action, three doubles teams from the San Diego State men's tennis squad experienced a reversal of fortune on Friday as all three Aztec pairings were eliminated in the main draw round of 64 at the 117th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships held at the La Jolla Beach Tennis Club.
The SDSU tandem of senior Eugenio Romero (Ensenada, Mexico) and freshman Billy Timu (Montreal, Quebec) went down in straight sets to UCLA's Michael Look and Jeremy Drean, 6-3, 6-0, while the duo of junior Anthony Gomez (Palm Desert, Calif.) and sophomore Robert Sabo (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) suffered a similar fate at the hands of Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, losing by the score of 6-1, 6-3.
After receiving a bye in the first round on Thursday, the Aztec combo of junior Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) and senior Stephan Timu (Montreal, Quebec) retired during the first set of their match on Friday, trailing 5-3 against Notre Dame's Ryan Keckley and Barry King.
SDSU will return to dual-match competition Tues., March 14, when it plays host to Yale at Aztec Tennis Center. The contest is slated to begin at noon.
