SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior guard Brandon Heath has been named an Associated Press honorable mention All-American on Tuesday. Heath becomes the first Aztec to earn AP All-America honors since Michael Cage garnered second-team honors in 1984.
Heath, who also earned the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year award, led SDSU to a 24-9 record and its first outright conference championship. He led the MWC in scoring with an average of 18.4 points per game as the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. Heath also led the MWC in 3-point field goals made (2.97 per game) and free-throw percentage (84.9 percent), and was sixth with 3.45 assists per game.
Heath, a Los Angeles, Calif., native, was the only MWC player to be named to the prestigious team and was one of just five players from California schools to receive All-American recognition.
Heath was the only player to be named MWC Player of the Week three times this season and established a new San Diego State record with five career weekly awards. The junior was also named to the all-district USBWA and NABC squads along with junior Marcus Slaughter.
