JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The San Diego State men's golf team has experienced success before at the Oregon Duck Invitational, and with that knowledge, they finished in first with a final score of 288-278-288--854 (-10) on the 72-par, 6,807 Shadow Hills Country Club golf course in Junction City, Ore.
The Aztecs held onto their seven-stroke lead from yesterday and finished 10 ahead of the competition. Today's win marks the second time in three years that SDSU has taken first at this event. The last time the Aztecs won this event they were led by, then-Aztec, Jeff Hansen, who also took the individual competition with a final round score of 211.
This is team's third tournament win this season, second for the spring portion of the 2005-06 campaign. SDSU's first spring win came from their previously played tournament at the 2006 Callaway Invitational. The most wins recorded during the spring, was set in 2002, as the Aztecs carded three tournament victories.
Sophomore Aaron Goldberg led all Aztec golfers and tied for third with University of Oregon golfer, Derek Sipe, with a 4-under, 212. For SDSU, this was the third best individual score in this tournament since the formation of the MWC. Goldberg was just one stroke shy of tying for first with Washington State's Ryan Witz and Washington's Joe Panzeri, who played as an individual.
Seniors Andrew Scott and Josh Warthen tied for fifth and 11th respectively, after carding a 214 (-2) and 215 (-1). Sophomore David Palm moved up from 26th to finish in the top-25 at the 20th position on the leaderboard. Cory Segall rounded out the participating Aztecs with a 31st place finish. Junior Jason Puterbaugh, who played as an individual, ended with a 9-over, 225 and in 36th place.
