IRVINE, Calif. - The seventh-ranked San Diego State water polo squad won its ninth straight game and wrapped up its six-match road trip with victories over conference foe UC Irvine, 10-5, and Maryland, 12-6, on Sunday. With the pair of wins, the Aztecs complete the road swing with a 6-0 mark and see their overall record improve to 18-5 overall and 4-2 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
In its first league match since March 12, SDSU allowed the first goal of the game to UCI's Gianna Rossi on a power play attempt, but came back to tie the score at two after one quarter. It was in the second period that the Aztecs took over as they posted four goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
From that point forward, SDSU kept the pressure on as it scored four goals over the course of two periods and allowed only two Anteater goals to record the 10-5 win.
Goalie Sarah Kilgore had a game-high 13 saves, while Jenna Schuster tallied three goals to lead all scorers in a winning effort. The Aztecs also received two goals from Rachel Serna and one apiece from Elana Cervantes, Anna Gonzales, Erinn Greenwood, Becca Ur and Stacy Werner to help lead SDSU to its fourth league victory.
In its final game of the road trip, Maryland played SDSU close throughout the first half as the score was tied at four after 14 minutes of action. Unfortunately for the Terps, the Aztecs turned it on offensively, scoring six in the period to take a 10-4 advantage and a lead it would not relinquish.
Kilgore and Heather Fenske combined to record eight saves in goal, while Stacy Werner scored three goals to lead San Diego State.
The Aztecs return to the pool Thursday, March 30, as they host California in an MPSF match. The contest is set for a 3 p.m. PST start at The Salvation Army Kroc Center.
