SAN DIEGO - San Diego State could not match Pacific's offense, as the Tigers went on to complete the weekend sweep over SDSU with a 10-4 win, Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss keeps the Aztecs losing streak going at 13 games.
A four-run second inning for Pacific (16-7) set the tone for the rest of the contest. After already putting a run on the board, second baseman Adam Ching brought home two more Tigers with a triple. A fielding error by third baseman Tim O'Brien allowed Ching to come all the way around and score in the same play. Pacific would increase its lead to 5-0 with another run in the third frame.
SDSU (6-23) edged its way back into the game, putting its first mark on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Right fielder Joseph Scaperotta got the first hit of the game for the Aztecs, slapping a double down the right field line. Scaperotta would score three batters later, when he was singled home by left fielder Paul Smyth.
The deficit was cut to two in the following inning, as SDSU put two more runs on the board. Designated hitter Joey Huskins led off the inning with a home run. Scaperotta was a catalyst once again for the Aztec offense as he walked and scored on a triple by shortstop Lance Zawadzki.
Pacific would end any hopes for an SDSU comeback, scoring four times in the sixth inning. Three of the four Tiger runs in the inning crossed the plate with two outs. Designated hitter Matt Berezay's two-run single was the big knock in the rally.
The Aztecs got one run back in the seventh inning from center fielder Quintin Berry, as he led off the inning with a solo home run, but it would be the last run of the afternoon for SDSU. Berry was one of two Aztecs to have multi-hit games. He finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while first baseman Brock Ungricht went 2-for-4.
Starting pitcher Will Miller suffered the loss. Miller (1-2) threw five complete, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and he struck out four. The win went to relief pitcher Jake Wild, evening his record at 2-2.
SDSU returns to Tony Gwynn Stadium for the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament. The tournament will be held from March 29-April 2 and all games will be played at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The first game for the Aztecs in the tournament will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. against New Mexico.
