LOS ANGELES - The UCLA Bruins completed a three-game sweep of San Diego State with a 9-1 victory over the Aztecs Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. In winning their fifth straight, the Bruins improved to 15-11 on the season. The loss was the 10th in a row for San Diego State as it fell to 6-20.
SDSU starter Will Miller (1-1) was the victim of a pair of errors in the second inning as he gave up an unearned run that put UCLA in front, 1-0. The home side added three runs in the next inning off Miller, however, on a walk to Blair Dunlap, an RBI double by Chris Jensen and a two-run homer by Tim Stewart.
The Aztecs got on the board with a single marker in the top of the fifth. Lance Zawadzki and Mike Willeford recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with Zawadzki scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of Quintin Berry.
However, UCLA answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Jensen and Sean Smith to make it a 5-1 contest. The Bruins put the game away with four runs (one earned) in the eighth off reliever Mike Koons.
As was the case in the first two games of the series, the Bruins' starting pitcher proved highly effective in keeping the SDSU offense at bay. This time it was junior right-hander Tyson Brummett, who went seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five to improve his record to 4-3.
Shortstop Nick Romero was the lone Aztec to record more than one hit, finishing with a pair of singles.
San Diego State now returns home to begin a 15-game home stand over the next four weeks beginning with a three-game series against Pacific that gets underway on Friday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
