ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The seventh-ranked San Diego State water polo team recorded two victories on the opening day of the 2006 Wolverine Invitational at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday. The Aztecs posted a 12-3 win over Cal Baptist in their first match and then came back to notch a 12-5 win over No. 19 Indiana later in the day. With its two wins, SDSU improves to 11-5 overall on the season.
San Diego State began the day with a convincing win over Cal Baptist behind the strength eight different Aztecs recording at least one goal. Leading the way for SDSU was Elana Cervantes, who scored three goals in the contest, and Cassie Zebisch, who netted a pair.
The Aztecs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one quarter and increased its lead to five goals (6-1) by halftime. SDSU cruised to its 11th victory of the year as it tallied six goals in the second half to provide the match's final margin.
In their second contest of the day against Indiana, the Aztecs again took the lead after one period, 3-1, and found itself up 5-3 after the first 14 minutes. From that point forward, San Diego State never trailed as it scored seven goals, compared to the Hoosiers' two, in the second half to post its second win of the invitational.
Rachel Serna, Becca Ur and Stacy Werner each scored twice, while Cervantes, Anna Gonzales, Nicole Louie, Ashley McCullum, Susan Stivers and Ashling Taylor found the back of the net once for SDSU.
The Aztecs return to the pool on Sunday, March 19, as it takes on Michigan at 9:30 a.m. EST and concludes the tournament with a contest against Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. EST.
