STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State scored nine times over the fifth and sixth innings, then held off a late San Diego State comeback as it defeated the Aztecs, 10-7, Tuesday evening at Allie Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater. The loss extended SDSU's losing streak to six games as it fell to 6-16 on the season. With the victory, the Cowboys improved to 11-4.
Freshman left-hander Lance Sewell (0-1), a transfer from Arizona, made his first start of the season and pitched well over the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. OSU's run in the first countered a Tim O`Brien solo homer in the top of the same inning, his team leading fourth round-tripper of the season.
The Cowboys got to Sewell in the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits and three walks. The big blow in the inning was a bases-loaded triple by Corey Brown. SDSU reliever Justin Lynch fared little better in the next frame, giving up four more runs to make it a 10-1 contest in favor of the home side.
San Diego State struck back with a pair of runs in the seventh on a walk to O'Brien, a single by Paul Smyth and an RBI single by Curt Mendoza. Smyth came home from third later in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Aztecs added four runs in their final at bat with shortstop Lance Zawadzki hitting a three-run homer to right center, his first of the year.
Oklahoma stating pitcher Brae Wright went seven innings to pick up his second win of the year to improve to 2-0. He scattered four hits, allowing three runs while striking out two. After giving up the home run to O'Brien in the first, Wright retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced, giving up just a walk through the first six innings.
For San Diego State, Zawadzki and Mendoza finished with two hits apiece as the Aztecs could muster only six total hits on the night.
SDSU and Oklahoma will conclude their two-game mid-week series on Wednesday, March 15, with a single game in Stillwater at 6:35 p.m. (CST).
