SAN DIEGO - Playing in its first dual match since Feb. 26, the San Diego State men's tennis team breezed past 66th-ranked Yale, 6-1, at Aztec Tennis Center on Tuesday. With the victory, the Aztecs snapped a three-match losing streak and evened their record at 4-4, while the Bulldogs dropped to 4-6 on the year.
SDSU wasted no time taking out its frustrations on its Ivy League opponent, winning all three doubles matches. The Aztec duo of Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero started things off with an 8-4 defeat of Yale's Jeff Dawson and Milosz Gudzowski. The tandem of Benedikt Stronk and Billy Timu then clinched the point for the scarlet and black with an 8-5 triumph over Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell. SDSU completed the sweep when the combo of Christian Groh and Stephan Timu, ranked 49th nationally in the latest collegiate poll, dispatched the pairing of Rory Green and Chris Lawler, 8-6.
The Aztecs kept up their strong play in singles competition, posting straight-set wins in five of six matches. Senior Stephan Timu collected his sixth victory in a row when he upended Michael Caldwell, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 4 position.
SDSU will return to the court on Wednesday when it squares off against 13th-ranked North Carolina at Aztec Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a noon start.
