SAN DIEGO - Battling rainy and blustery conditions, the San Diego State women's rowing team completed its second consecutive dual race of the weekend when it squared off against Sacramento State Sunday morning along the shores of Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Aztecs and Hornets split their four scheduled events with SDSU capturing victories in the junior varsity eight and varsity four categories.

"Overall, I thought it was a very positive weekend," said SDSU head coach Jennifer Zebroski. "We had some boats do exceptionally well the past couple of days, and hopefully we can build upon those results and also focus on the things we need to improve on for the rest of the season."

The Aztecs got off to a good start when the junior varsity eight boat, occupied by Raelyn Drury (coxswain), Kelly Rutherford (stroke), Robin Lauber (seven), Allison Hardin (six), Kim Dale (five), Julie Boerger (four), Caroline Yeatman (three), Kaitlin Drake (two) and Audrey Edney (bow), crossed the finish line with a winning time of 7:01.50, followed by Sacramento State at 7:09.70.

In the varsity eight competition, the Aztecs' top boat suffered a disappointing defeat after an unidentified boat crossed into SDSU's path, forcing coxswain Caitlynn Crouch to alter course between the 1,000- and 1,500-meter mark. The Aztecs tried to make up ground down the stretch, but Sacramento State pulled away during final 500 meters for the win. The Hornets completed the course with a time of 6:52.90, ahead of SDSU which came in with a 6:59.50 clocking.

The Aztecs' lone crew in the novice eight race pulled off a second-place finish (7:24.90) behind the Sacramento State `A' boat (7:11.60) and in front of the Hornets' `B' entry (7:27.00).

The day's activities concluded with the varsity four division as SDSU split its third varsity eight crew, which competed the previous day against UC Davis, into two fours. The results were quite favorable as the Aztecs' `A' (7:46.70) and `B' (8:02.70) boats grabbed the top two spots ahead of Sacramento State (8:11.70)

SDSU will now have three weeks to prepare for the 33rd Annual San Diego Crew Classic, scheduled for Apr. 1-2, on Crown Point Shores in Mission Bay.
