SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's rowing team continued its spring season on Saturday, winning two out of three events in a dual race against UC Davis at the Port of Sacramento. The Aztec varsity eight crew pulled off a come-from-behind victory with a time of 6:56.31, while the SDSU junior varsity `A' boat emerged triumphant in its race with a 6:58.33 clocking.
In the varsity eight competition, UC Davis came off the starting line and grabbed an early advantage through the first 1,000 meters, before the Aztec crew, consisting of Caitlynn Crouch (coxswain), Mia Lysen (stroke), Nancy Balt (seven), Jessica Hays (six), Terra Meck (five), Katie Heisinger (four), Tashina Vavuris (three), Amanda Briggs (two) and Ashley Pfohl (bow), began to make its move. The scarlet and black pulled even with the Aggies at approximately the 1,400-meter mark and then took the lead during the last quarter of the race, crossing the finish line by a boat length over the host school.
SDSU had two crews compete in the junior varsity category where the winning Aztec `A' boat, manned by Raelyn Drury (coxswain), Kelly Rutherford (stroke), Robin Lauber (seven), Allison Hardin (six), Kim Dale (five), Julie Boerger (four), Caroline Yeatman (three), Kaitlin Drake (two) and Audrey Edney (bow), jumped out to a boat-length lead midway through the race and then glided home with a comfortable six-second margin over runner-up UC Davis (7:04.68). The SDSU `B' followed in third with a time of 7:18.61.
The Aztecs had their sights set on a sweep in the third and final event of the day, the novice eight race. However, the Aggies thwarted SDSU's bid as UC Davis (7:19.12) staged a rally of its own to clip the Aztecs (7:20.32) at the wire in a hard-fought battle.
SDSU hits the water again on Sunday when they square off against Sacramento State in another dual race on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The action gets underway at 8 a.m. with the junior varsity eight competition, followed by the varsity eight at 8:30 a.m., the novice eight at 9 a.m., and the varsity four at 9:30 a.m. The Aztecs will then have three weeks to prepare for the 33rd Annual San Diego Crew Classic, scheduled for Apr. 1-2, on Crown Point Shores in Mission Bay.
