SAN DIEGO - San Diego State right-hander Justin Masterson has been named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in last Friday's contest against nationally-ranked Pepperdine.
It is the first conference honor for the 6-6 junior from Beavercreek, Ohio, who came to the Aztecs this season after two years at Bethel College in Indiana.
Masterson recorded his second win of the year in SDSU's 3-1 victory over then-No. 12 Pepperdine on March 3. He struck out 11 batters and walked none, while allowing just one earned run on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work. Masterson did not allow more than one base runner in any inning other than the second, and all the hits he gave up were singles.
Masterson becomes the second Aztec to win a weekly conference accolade as senior outfielder Paul Smyth was named the league's player of the week on Feb. 6.
San Diego State returns to action on Tuesday (March 7) when it travels to Cal State Fullerton for a single game at 6:00 p.m. The Aztecs then face a three-game series against cross-town rival University of San Diego this weekend.
