SAN DIEGO - Erin Floros homered in her first collegiate at-bat and added two RBI to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 9-4 win over Cal Poly in the first day of the 16th annual Campbell-Cartier Classic held at SDSU Softball Stadium on Thursday. The Aztecs (1-0) scored their most runs in a season-opening game since scoring 14 in a victory (14-2) over San Diego on Feb. 12, 1997.

Floros gave SDSU an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when she took a two-out pitch and drove the ball over the left field wall for the Aztecs' first home run of the year.

SDSU scored five more runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead. With one out, senior Meagan Hartung reached on an error and advanced to second on sophomore Tamani Wells' groundout. Hartung stole third and, after a Floros walk, scored when sophomore Megan McDonald reached on a throwing error. Freshman Monica Alnes had an RBI single and sophomore Taryin Casillas followed with a single to right field, loading the bases for junior Amanda Beasley. Beasley ripped a ball down the third base line for a three-run double as SDSU would never look back.

The Mustangs (0-1) did make it interesting with a pair of two-run home runs in the fourth and fifth off senior pitcher Celena Velasquez, but the Aztecs bounced back with three combined runs in the fifth and sixth to hold on for the victory.

Floros went 2-for-2 with a two RBI, two walks and two runs to lead SDSU, while Casillas had two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth, and scored twice. Hartung added an RBI triple in the sixth.

Senior Celena Velasquez (1-0) earned the win for the Aztecs after striking out four, while allowing seven hits and four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. Sophomore Christina Ross, a Kansas transfer, made her debut in a SDSU uniform by retiring the final seven batters she faced to pick up the save.

In other Campbell-Cartier games, nationally second-ranked UCLA defeated Sacramento State, 22-3, and Cal Poly by a score of 13-0. Also on Thursday, UC Santa Barbara scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 3-2 win over Sacramento State.
