FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Marcus Slaughter had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead San Diego State to an 85-81 win Saturday night over Colorado State to stay on top in the Mountain West Conference.
Brandon Heath scored 28 points for the Aztecs (15-6, 8-1 MWC). Mohamed Abukar added 13, and John Sharper scored 11.
Colorado State (12-10, 1-8) trailed by as much as 15 but was within one with 41 seconds to go.
Slaughter made one of two free throws to put San Diego State ahead 83-81, giving the Rams a chance to tie with 20 seconds left.
But with the clock ticking down, Jason Smith turned the ball over and the Rams had to foul. Sharper made both free throws to put San Diego State ahead 85-81. The Rams got the ball back with two seconds to go, but Sharper stole the ball as time expired.
Colorado State scored 14 unanswered points capped by two free throws by Stuart Creason to get within 80-79 with 1:16 to go. Cory Lewis scored eight points in that run for the Rams.
After a San Diego State timeout, the Rams fouled, and Slaughter made both free throws to give SDSU an 82-79 lead. Lewis answered with a jumper, and Slaughter was fouled again. The Rams couldn't take over the lead.
Lewis led CSU with 26 points, while Smith had 16.
