IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine sent nine men to the plate in both the second and seventh innings, scoring four times in each frame en route to a 12-1 win over San Diego State Saturday evening at Anteater Ballpark. The win was the fourth straight for UCI, which improved to 8-5. The Aztecs, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 4-9.
For the second straight night, the Aztecs were unable to generate any offense as UCI starter Scott Gorgen (3-1) scattered five hits while striking out eight over 5.2 innings. The lone run he allowed was unearned.
The home side jumped on SDSU starter Mike Koons (1-2) for its first four runs, using four hits, a walk and a hit batter in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.
San Diego State cut into the deficit with its lone run of the game in the fourth. Paul Smyth reached on a fielding error by Anteater second baseman Josh Tavelli and advanced to second on a passed ball. He then scored on Tim O'Brien's two-out single to left center field.
UCI upped its advantage to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth off reliever Brett Douglas, who gave up back-to-back doubles followed by consecutive singles to begin the inning. The Anteaters then put the game away in the next inning, sending nine men to the plate to make it a 10-1 contest.
Irvine tacked on its final two runs in its final at bat on a pair of singles, a hit batter, a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
UCI reliever Gary Nakashima kept the Aztecs in check over the final 3.1 innings to record his first save of the season.
Quintin Berry and Joey Huskins had two hits apiece to account for four of the team's seven hits on the night. On the mound, redshirt freshman Justin Lynch was impressive in his three innings of work as he gave up just one hit while striking out three.
The third and final game of the SDSU-UCI series will be played on Sunday (Feb. 26) at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
