SDSU Looks for Two in a Row
Following its victory at the Lady Braveheart Challenge, the San Diego State women's golf team heads to Fresno, Calif., for the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament will take place Feb. 27-28, at the Copper River Country Club. This is the Aztecs' first appearance in the Kitahara Invitational, which was first played in 2005.
SDSU will face a top field in Fresno, as 12 of the 19 teams participating are ranked higher than the No. 73 Aztecs according to golfweek.com, including No. 25 Long Beach State and No. 29 Oregon.
Aztec Line-Up For This Week
SDSU head coach Felicia Brown announced a line-up of two seniors, one sophomore and two freshmen for next week's Fresno State tournament.
Senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland) travels to Fresno after her second-place finish at the Lady Braveheart Challenge, while classmate Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) tied for 12th at the same event where she competed as an individual.
The pair of upperclassmen will be joined by sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) and true freshmen Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) and Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.). All three placed in the top 14 of the Aztecs' season-opening event in Riverside County.
Aztecs Win Lady Braveheart Challenge
SDSU finished first at UC Riverside's Lady Braveheart Challenge at the Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif., Feb. 13-14. It is the third team tournament title for SDSU in the 2005-06 season. The Aztecs ended the 36-hole, two-day tournament with a final score of 624 (+48), including a second round 309, beating second place UC Davis (632) by eight strokes.
Heather MacRae was edged by Jessica Huss of Cal Poly by one stroke for the individual crown. MacRae finished the tournament at 10-over 154. Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) wasn't far behind MacRae, tying for third place with a final score of 11-over 155. Anna Booth, who participated in the tournament as an individual, ended in a three-way tie for sixth, carding a 12-over 156.
Along with MacRae and McLeod, Maki Kamimura and freshmen Heather Wilson and Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) all finished in the top 15. Kamimura tied for 10th with a final score of 16-over 160. Erlandson and Wilson were part of a three-way tie for 14th, shooting an 18-over 162.
Six Aztecs competed individually at the Lady Braveheart Challenge, including Booth, senior Megan Mulhaupt, junior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), redshirt freshman Amanda Egan (Benicia, Calif.) and sophomore MacKenzie Swecker (Winnemucca, Nev.). Mulhaupt shot a 17-over 161 and was second among individual golfers. Oliver, Egan and Swecker all tied for 23rd overall.
Three Wins This Season
The Lady Braveheart Challenge was the third tournament title this season for SDSU, following wins during the fall campaign at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Tournament and its home event, the Lady Aztec Fall Classic.
In the La Quinta tournament, the Aztecs jumped from third to first, edging Sacramento State by just one stroke for the title. SDSU improved its first round score by eight strokes for its first event title since 2003.
The team title wasn't the only first-place finish for the Aztecs. Megan McLeod also won the individual crown as well, finishing as the only golfer under par at 1-under 145.
SDSU also beat Sacramento State for its season tournament title of the season at the Lady Aztec Fall Classic. The Aztecs were 10 strokes better than the second-place Hornets, logging a 54-hole total of 42-over 906. Heather MacRae and Maki Kamimura were the leading individual golfers for SDSU, as they tied for seventh overall.
Wilson and Kamimura Holding Their Own
Maki Kamimura and Heather Wilson are having strong first years on The Mesa. Wilson is third for SDSU in stroke average at 78.38, with Kamimura right behind in fourth with 78.54. The two are not playing like freshmen, as Kamimura has two top-10 finishes this season, including tying for seventh place at the Lady Aztec. The Lady Aztec was the best tournament for Wilson as well, with a 12th-place finish.
Coming Attractions
After the Kitahara Invitational, The Aztecs head to Las Vegas for the UNLV Spring Invitational, hosted by No. 12 UNLV. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place from March 13-15, and features 18 teams at the par-72, 6,009-yard Black Mountain Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nev.
Head Coach Felicia Brown
Head coach Felicia Brown is in her fourth season at the helm of the SDSU golf program after serving as an assistant in 2001-02. A native San Diegan, Brown prepped locally at San Marcos High School before playing collegiately at Arizona.
She is assisted by Doug Barba for the third year in a row.
