San Diego State (18-7 overall; 11-2 in Mountain West Conference), winners of 10 of its last 11, 12 of its last 14 and 14 of its last 17 games, will try and clinch a share of its first regular-season conference title in 28 years on Wednesday night at long-time rival Brigham Young (16-7 overall; 8-4 MWC).
Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. MST/6:05 p.m. PST and the game will be televised by SportsWest. Eddie Doucette (play-by-play) and Blaine Fowler (analysis) will call the action. Ted Leitner will provide the call on radio, XPRES 1090-AM.
On Wednesday night, the Aztecs are looking to clinch a share of the third conference title of the school's Division I era (previous regular-season titles in 1976-77 (shared) and 1977-78), win a school-record 12th conference game and give Steve Fisher his 100th career victory at San Diego State. Standing in the way, is a Brigham Young team which has won six of its last seven games and owns an 11-game home winning streak, the nation's 13th longest active winning streak.
On Saturday, SDSU rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat TCU, 83-71. Junior guard Brandon Heath, who on Monday earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors for a school record fifth career time, scored 20 points and added four assists. Junior forward Marcus Slaughter narrowly missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Mohamed Abukar connected on 6-of-10 attempts from the field en route to 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Richie Williams also reached double figures with 13 points and six assists for the Aztecs.
TCU led 46-35 with 17:58 remaining and 62-58 with 6:42 to play, but San Diego State ended the contest on a 25-9 run to secure a season sweep of the series. The Aztecs connected on 10 three-point field goals for the second consecutive game, shooting 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from three-point range.
Brigham Young is currently tied for third place in the league race, two games behind SDSU in the loss column. The Cougars won for the sixth time in seven games on Saturday with a 74-68 win at Wyoming. Keena Young recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Brigham Young leads the series 38-19, although the Aztecs have won the last three encounters, including an 88-61 decision earlier this season on Jan. 21 at Cox Arena. The Aztecs shot 51.7 percent that night and committed just eight turnovers, while holding the Cougars to 37.3 percent from the floor. Heath led all scorers with 26 points and Slaughter posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Aztecs are just 3-23 lifetime against the Cougars in Provo, with victories coming in 1985, 1996 and 2005. The current three-game winning streak against Brigham Young marks just the second time in the 57 previous meetings that SDSU has won three straight over the Cougars. The Aztecs have never defeated Brigham Young in four consecutive meetings.
San Diego State is looking to extend a five-game conference road winning streak. It is the longest road winning streak of any kind since a six-game road winning streak from Feb. 9, 1968-Jan. 16, 1970 and is the longest conference road winning streak since a seven game winning streak from Jan. 20, 1968-Dec. 7, 1968. The five game road winning streak is the longest of SDSU's 36 seasons at the Division I level.
