SAN DIEGO - San Diego State juniors Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 13 First Team. San Diego State was one of 13 teams in the country to have two or more players receive first-team honors. Heath and Slaughter become the eighth and ninth players in SDSU history to receive the award in the Division I era.
Heath leads the Mountain West Conference in scoring (18.3 ppg), free throw percentage (86.1 percent), and 3-point field goals made (2.88 pg). Slaughter ranks third in the conference in scoring (17.1 ppg) and is second in conference in rebounding, averaging 10.6 rpg. Heath and Slaughter have guided the Aztecs to 10 wins in their last 11 games and an 18-7 overall record (11-2 MWC).
The last Aztec to garner first-team NABC honors was forward/center Aerick Sanders, who won the award back in 2004. During that season, Sanders led the MWC in offensive rebounding (4.73 rpg), was fourth in conference in total rebounds (9.8 rpg) and was fifth in conference in scoring with 16.1 ppg.
The all-district honor is given out yearly to the top 150 student-athletes in men's college basketball. Close to 5,000 university and college basketball coaches make up the group that votes for the top student-athletes.
The Aztecs look to continue their winning ways as they head to Provo, Utah, to square off with BYU at 6 p.m. PST on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Marriott Center.
