SAN DIEGO - Despite a strong performance by starting pitcher Justin Masterson, Cal Poly defeated San Diego State 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Masterson's only two mistakes in the game were giving up two home runs to Jimmy Van Ostrand. A two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the third proved to be the difference for Cal Poly.
Masterson struck out 12 Mustangs over his 7 innings of work, including striking out the side in the opening frame. He allowed three earned runs on five hits and walked three. Masterson took the loss, evening his record at 1-1.
The only run for SDSU (2-7) came from a home run off the bat off freshman Nick Romero in the fifth inning. The shortstop blasted one off the pole of the scoreboard to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Senior Sam Pepper had another two-hit game, going 2-for-5, while first baseman Brock Ungricht had a pair of singles as well, with a walk and a hit by pitch. Leftfielder Joseph Scaperotta and centerfielder Quintin Berry had the other hits for SDSU. The Aztecs offense still struggled throughout the contest, leaving a total of 13 runners on base.
Masterson's counterpart, Bud Norris earned the win, improving to 3-0. He threw six complete innings and struck out seven Aztecs on one earned run and three hits.
Cal Poly (9-2) got their fourth run of the game, when relief pitcher Brett Douglas walked in a run in the eighth inning.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
