SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference women's indoor track and field co-athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday. Asay, who is being honored for the first time in her career, shares the award with Ashley Owens of UNLV.
Asay established a new school and conference indoor record in the pole vault at the Albuquerque Invitational on Feb. 11. She captured first place in the event with a career-best leap of 14 feet, 0.50 inches, surpassing Shayla Balentine's year-old mark of 14-0 set at the 2005 MWC indoor championships. Asay's performance was also an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and currently ranks third in the nation.
Asay's award is the fifth for an SDSU performer in the seven-year history of the conference and marks the first time the Aztecs have collected back-to-back honors for indoor track and field. Freshman Decontee Kaye took home league accolades last week following a record-setting effort in the triple jump on Feb. 4.
Asay and the Aztec track and field team conclude the indoor portion of their campaign at the MWC championships Feb. 23-25, in Albuquerque, N.M. SDSU's outdoor season commences March 11, when the scarlet and black travel across town to compete in the San Diego City Championships on the campus of UC San Diego.
