The San Diego State women's golf team started its 2006 spring schedule Monday with a 27-over 315, which is good for first place at UC Riverside's Lady Braveheart Challenge. The Aztecs own a nine-stroke lead over second place Santa Clara (324) after the first of two rounds at the par-72, 6,162-yard Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif.
SDSU senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland) and freshman Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) are tied for the individual lead, after both posting rounds of 4-over 76, including matching scores of 39 and 37 on the front and back nine. The pair leads the event by two strokes over Santa Clara's Candice Palmer, while Sacramento State's Margaux Sheehan and UC Davis' Danielle Cvitanov trail by three strokes at 7-over 79.
MacRae and Kamimura are joined by redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.), who is tied for 12th with a first round 81, and freshmen Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.), who are tied for 15th and 25th respectively.
Six Aztecs are also competing individually at the Lady Braveheart Challenge, including sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) and redshirt freshman Amanda Egan (Benicia, Calif.), who are tied for sixth place at 8-over 80.
The Aztecs will be looking to secure their third team tournament title of 2005-06, in Tuesday's second and final round at Oak Valley Golf Course.
