SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Decontee Kaye (Hayward, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference women's indoor track and field athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday. Kaye's award is the just the fourth for an SDSU indoor performer and the first since Nicole Ireland won in 2004.
Kaye established a new school record in her very first collegiate meet at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 4. She finished second in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 42 feet, 2 inches, becoming just the second Aztec to surpass 40 feet and recorded the second-longest triple jump in MWC history. Her mark eclipsed Nicole Ireland's record of 40-4 set at the same meet in 2004.
Kaye's jump is also the top distance in the conference this season and is currently 11th-best in the nation.
Kaye and the SDSU track and field team continue their indoor campaign on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they travel to compete in the Albuquerque Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. MST in Albuquerque, N.M.
