SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis squad opened the 2006 campaign with a pair of convincing victories and continued its success over Big West Conference competition after defeating UC Riverside, 7-0, and CS Fullerton by a score of 6-1 at Aztec Tennis Center. The 47th-ranked Aztecs improve to 116-7 all-time versus members of the Big West and now have won 11 consecutive season-opening matches.
SDSU began the day against UC Riverside and promptly took the doubles point after the team of Sisse Nielsen-Eliska Krausova cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 and Esther Cadua and Alesya Vidov claimed an 8-2 win at No. 3.
In singles play, San Diego State experienced no trouble as all six Aztecs recorded straight sets victories en route to the shutout.
In the afternoon match against the Titans, SDSU once again won the doubles point after notching wins at all three positions. Dita Hauerlandova and Nielsen posted an 8-1 win over Ruya Inalpulat and Gina Le at No. 1, while Krausova-Milana Yusupov and Cadua-Vidov collected wins of 8-1 and 8-2, respectively.
The Aztecs continued their stellar singles play as the afternoon progressed as they won five of six matches.
Nielsen was first off the court as she defeated Chip Dunbar, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. SDSU increased its lead to 3-0 when Yusupov downed Mai-Ly Tran at the fourth position, 6-1, 6-0.
San Diego State later received wins from Vidov (6-0, 4-6, 10-1), Krausova (6-3, 6-1) and Cadua (6-2, 6-2) to close out the afternoon.
The Aztecs (2-0) return to action Thursday, Feb. 2, when they travel north to face Long Beach State. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
