SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brandon Heath scored 26 points and Marcus Slaughter added 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead San Diego State to an 88-61 victory over BYU Saturday night.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Aztecs (12-6, 5-1 Mountain West Conference), who took over sole possession of first place in the Mountain West.

San Diego State led 21-19 with seven minutes to play in the first half when Slaughter's steal and subsequent dunk ignited a 21-5 run to give the Aztecs a commanding 42-24 halftime lead.

Heath, who scored 14 of his points in the second half, also had six rebounds and four assists.

Keena Young led BYU (10-6, 2-3) with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Slaughter, who had his fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season, left the game with a slightly sprained right ankle with 5:22 remaining.

John Sharper had 16 points for San Diego State and Mohamed Abukar had 15.

The 27-point margin of victory was the Aztecs' largest since they joined the Mountain West Conference, and their largest ever over BYU.

San Diego State's 5-1 start matched its best conference start since it began the 1974-75 season with a 5-1 mark.
