Aztecs Take Break From Final Exams; Continue Three-Game Homestand on Saturday Night with Contest Against UC Santa Barbara
San Diego State (4-4) takes a break from semester final exams and continues a three-game homestand against longtime rival UC Santa Barbara (3-3) on Saturday night at Cox Arena.
The 87th basketball meeting between the teams is set for a 7:05 p.m. PST start, with the contest being broadcast by Channel 4 San Diego, with Steve Quis and Jim Brogan providing the call. The Aztec game can be heard on XPRS-1090 AM (The Mighty 1090) with Alan Horton calling play-by-play.
San Diego State is looking to break a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games to Pac-10 schools last week. On Tuesday night, the Aztecs lost at California, 82-64, before suffering a 60-49 setback to Washington State on Saturday.
San Diego State led the Cougars 27-21 at intermission and held a 36-29 lead with 15 minutes to play but could not overcome an 0-for-23 stretch from the field spanning 16 minutes of the second half. Despite the cold shooting, the Aztecs connected on 26.4 percent from the floor in the game, SDSU trailed by just three points with 2:46 to play.
San Diego State held a 39-36 rebound advantage, including a 16-8 edge on the offensive glass and outscored the Cougars 19-10 at the free throw line but were unable to overcome the worst shooting night by an SDSU squad since Dec. 7, 1973, when the Aztecs connected on just 26.4 percent in a 92-57 loss to Oklahoma.
Junior forward Marcus Slaughter recorded his third consecutive double-double and tallied 20 or more points for the fourth consecutive game en route to earning Mountain West Conference player of the week honors. Slaughter scored a game-high 26 points and added a career-best 17 rebounds in recording his 17th career double-double.
San Diego State, which is looking to rebound from its first two-game losing streak, will be able to add some depth to the frontcourt later in the month. Senior Trimaine Davis, who underwent surgery on Nov. 30 to remove a bone chip in his right knee has started participating in some halfcourt drills and junior forward Mohamed Abukar, a transfer from Florida, will be eligible to play in the contest at Providence on Dec. 27. The addition of the two players should help the preseason Mountain West Conference favorites add some much needed depth to the front line.
UC Santa Barbara is 3-3 on the season, including a 67-65 victory over San Diego. The Gauchos three setbacks have all come on the road and have been against some pretty stiff competition - North Carolina, Arizona State and Loyola Marymount.
The Aztecs conclude the threegame homestand on Tuesday night against Northeast Conference member Maryland-Baltimore Country. The Aztecs knocked off NEC preseason favorite Albany, 80-53, earlier this season at Cox Arena. Game time is set for 8:05 p.m. PST, as the Aztec women will play host to Boise State at 5:30 p.m. PST. One ticket will provide admission to both games.
