COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Marcus Slaughter has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. The weekly honor is Slaughter's first career award.
The Riverside, Calif., native recorded consecutive double-doubles against Pac-10 competition last week, while scoring 48 of SDSU's 113 points (42.5 percent). In the Aztecs' 82-64 loss to California, Slaughter posted a team-high 22 points and game-high 13 rebounds, connecting on 8-of-14 from the field.
This past Saturday, Slaughter led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in a loss to Washington State. The junior forward also tied a career high with his 12 made free throws (12-for-15) against the Cougars.
For the week, Slaughter averaged 24 points, 15 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.5 blocks per game, while shooting 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field and 81.8 percent (18-for-22) from the free-throw line.
Slaughter now has posted 17 career double-doubles, including three in a row, and has scored 20 or more points in four straight games for the first time in his Aztec career. Prior to this season, Slaughter never scored 20-plus points in three consecutive games. He currently leads the MWC in scoring (19.4 points per game) and is second in rebounding (11.1 rebounds per game).
